In a much-needed respite for Mumbai residents, the Tansa Dam, a crucial water source for the city, has begun to overflow. This development eases the water concerns for Mumbaikars, which had been mounting over the past few months.
The Tansa Dam, operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), reached its overflow level of 128.63 meters this evening. At precisely 4:15 PM, two gates were opened, marking the start of the overflow. This comes after two days of continuous and heavy rainfall in the dam’s catchment area, significantly boosting water levels.
The recent heavy rains have played a crucial role in filling the dam. Just a few weeks ago, there were concerns whether the dam would reach its capacity this year, given the initially low water levels. However, with the overflow of the Tansa Dam following the Tulsi Dam, the situation has markedly improved.
With a maximum capacity of 14,508 crore liters, the Tansa Dam is vital for Mumbai’s water supply. Last year, the dam overflowed on July 26 at 4:35 AM, and in 2022, it reached its full capacity on July 14 at 8:50 PM.
Residents in and around the Tansa Dam area are advised to remain vigilant due to the increased water levels. The overflowing dam signifies a significant relief for the city, promising a more stable water supply in the coming days.
